Why Number Bonds?

One number can have many structures.

Number bonds help children see that the same whole can be made from different parts.

8 5 + 3

The number stays the same. What changes is the way the child sees it. That flexibility supports addition, subtraction, place value, mental mathematics, and later multiplication.

An Important Benchmark

There is a reason we spend time making 10.

Seeing 10 as 5 + 5, 6 + 4, 7 + 3, 8 + 2, and 9 + 1 gives children relationships they can draw on again and again.

Later, these relationships support mental addition, subtraction, place value, and efficient calculation.

For Parents

You do not need to teach a lesson.

Give your child space to build, draw, or think. If a missing part feels difficult, use counters, cubes, coins, buttons, or another simple object.

1 Build the whole.
2 Cover or separate one part.
3 Ask, “What remains?”

The goal is not speed. The goal is to help the child see the relationship.
