Help Without Taking Over
What Parents Can Do When a Child Is Struggling With Math
Your child is stuck on a math problem.
Maybe you know how to solve it. Maybe you remember something vaguely similar from school. Maybe the method on the page looks nothing like the way you learned it.
What should you do?
Parents are often told to “help with homework,” but that phrase can quietly place an unreasonable burden on them. Helping begins to sound like teaching, and suddenly a parent is expected to know the mathematics, understand the teacher’s method, diagnose what went wrong, and explain everything correctly at the kitchen table.
That is not what I mean by helping.
Your child already has a mathematics teacher.
A parent can support learning without becoming the teacher.
Sometimes that means listening. Sometimes it means asking one useful question. Sometimes it means finding the right tutor. Sometimes it means scheduling a conversation with the mathematics teacher.
And sometimes it means recognizing that the problem your child is struggling with today actually began several ideas earlier.
That last point is especially important.
Struggle Is Not Always a Sign That Something Is Wrong
Mathematics should not feel easy all the time.
If a child is only working on things they already understand comfortably, there may not be much new learning taking place.
Learning often happens near the edge of understanding.
There is something the child knows, followed by something they can almost make sense of, followed by the point where the mathematics begins to become uncertain.
That uncertainty can feel uncomfortable.
A child may interpret it as:
“I’m bad at math.”
I would rather help the child see it differently:
“We have reached the part you don’t understand yet.”
That small change in language matters.
Difficulty is no longer evidence that the child lacks mathematical ability.
It is information.
It tells us where we need to look.
At the Edge of Understanding, Start at the Beginning
I have said this many times in teaching:
The best place to start is the beginning.
I do not mean going all the way back to first-grade mathematics every time a child struggles.
I mean going back far enough to find the last idea the child genuinely understands.
Then begin there.
Suppose a child is struggling with fractions.
The natural response is often:
“We need more fraction practice.”
Perhaps.
But consider a child trying to simplify
If multiplication facts are still difficult, the child may not readily see the common factors of 18 and 24.
Or suppose the child is adding
Finding common denominators becomes much harder when multiples of 3 and 4 are not familiar.
The visible struggle is fractions.
But the beginning of the difficulty may be multiplication.
More fraction worksheets may simply produce more frustration.
The same pattern appears throughout mathematics.
- A child struggling with long division may need stronger multiplication understanding.
- A child struggling with algebraic fractions may still be uncertain about ordinary fractions.
- A child who struggles to solve equations may have an incomplete understanding of equality or inverse operations.
- A child struggling with multiplication may really need stronger number sense, addition, place value, or equal-group understanding.
Mathematics builds.
What we are learning today often rests on what we learned yesterday.
So when a difficulty keeps returning, one of the most useful questions is:
“What does this idea depend on?”
The parent does not necessarily need to know the answer.
But recognizing that there may be an earlier foundation involved can completely change the kind of help a child receives.
Do Not Keep Treating the Symptom
Imagine a staircase.
A child is struggling on Step 7.
We keep giving the child more Step 7 practice.
Again and again.
But perhaps Step 4 was never secure.
There is the beginning.
Strengthen Step 4 and Steps 5, 6, and 7 may suddenly become much easier.
This is one reason I would hesitate before saying:
“My child is bad at fractions.”
Fractions may simply be the place where an earlier weakness finally became impossible to hide.
That is a very different problem.
And, importantly, it gives us somewhere to go.
Parents Do Not Have to Diagnose the Mathematics
There is an important caveat here.
Parents should not leave this article thinking they now need to trace every struggle through years of mathematics curriculum.
That simply turns the parent into the teacher again.
You can notice.
You might notice:
“She is working on fractions, but she still counts out many multiplication facts.”
“He can follow the steps, but he cannot explain what the numbers mean.”
“Every problem seems to require starting again from the beginning.”
“This seems much harder for her than I expected.”
Those observations are valuable.
You can take them to someone who is in a better position to help.
That might be the mathematics teacher. It might be a tutor. It might be a carefully chosen resource.
A parent may not know exactly where the foundation broke down.
But a parent can recognize that we may be practicing the symptom instead of strengthening the foundation.
That realization is already useful.
Helping Does Not Always Mean Explaining
There are many ways to help a child.
- Listen while your child tells you what is confusing.
- Help them write down a question to ask the teacher.
- Contact the teacher and ask whether an earlier concept needs strengthening.
- Find a good tutor.
- Locate a visual resource that explains the idea differently.
- Reassure the child that not understanding something immediately is part of learning.
All of these are forms of help.
Sometimes finding the right person to provide the mathematical explanation is better than trying to provide an explanation yourself.
There is nothing wrong with saying:
“I don’t know the best way to explain this, but we’ll make sure you get the help you need.”
That tells the child two useful things at once.
You do not have to know everything.
And being stuck does not mean staying stuck.
If You Help Directly, Keep One Thing in Mind
There is also nothing wrong with helping your child directly when the mathematics is familiar to you.
But I would keep one caveat in mind:
Help the child understand, not merely finish.
It is very easy for help to become:
“Do this.”
“Now put the 4 here.”
“No, subtract first.”
“That’s wrong.”
“Here, let me show you.”
Soon the assignment is finished, but the thinking has mostly belonged to the parent.
If you decide to help directly, keep your intervention small.
You might ask:
- “Show me what you understand so far.”
- “What part is confusing?”
- “Could you draw it?”
- “Is there something you already know that could help?”
Then give the mathematics back to the child.
For example, suppose the child is stuck on
Rather than supplying 56, you might ask:
“Do you know a multiplication fact close to this one?”
Perhaps the child knows
2 × 8 = 16
Then the child can build:
You opened a door.
The child still did the walking.
That is the distinction.
Sometimes the Mathematics Teacher Is the Best Next Step
Parents should feel comfortable contacting the teacher before a small misunderstanding becomes a much larger one.
And I would try to keep that conversation centered on learning rather than grades.
Instead of beginning with:
“Why did my child get a C?”
you might ask:
- “What concept seems to be giving her trouble?”
- “Is there something earlier that she may need to strengthen?”
- “What are you noticing about how she approaches the problems?”
- “Is there something we can reinforce at home without teaching a different method?”
Those questions can reveal things that one homework assignment cannot.
The teacher sees the child in a mathematical setting that the parent does not.
Use that information.
Sometimes the Right Tutor Is the Better Choice
A good tutor can be enormously helpful.
But I would not judge tutoring only by whether homework gets completed or grades immediately rise.
A strong tutor should be interested in the beginning of the difficulty.
Suppose a student comes for help with fractions.
A good tutor may discover that the real obstacle is multiplication, factors, division, or weak part-whole understanding.
The tutor should be willing to go backward before rushing forward.
That may mean spending less time on tonight’s worksheet for a while and more time rebuilding the mathematics the worksheet depends on.
I would look for a tutor who asks children to explain their thinking, uses different representations when necessary, and is willing to slow down when a foundation needs strengthening.
The goal should be increasing independence.
Not permanent dependence on the tutor.
Do Not Make the Grade the Main Story
Grades are part of school.
They matter.
But learning should be bigger than the grade.
If the first question after every test is
“What did you get?”
a child can begin to hear:
This is what mathematics is for.
Then mistakes become threatening.
Difficult problems become things to avoid.
Struggle feels dangerous.
And children may begin to resent learning because learning has become inseparable from evaluation.
I would rather ask:
- “What do you understand better now?”
- “What was difficult?”
- “Did anything finally click?”
- “What would you like more help understanding?”
- “Show me something you learned.”
A disappointing grade can tell us that something deserves attention.
It should not become a statement about who the child is.
And it certainly should not become evidence that the child is “not a math person.”
Protect the Child’s Willingness to Learn
There is something bigger at stake than tonight’s assignment.
Every difficult problem is quietly teaching a child something about what it means to learn.
When I do not immediately know what to do, what happens next?
Do I panic?
Do I wait for someone to rescue me?
Do I decide I cannot do mathematics?
Or do I expect that there is something here I can eventually understand?
That is why struggle should not automatically trigger rescue.
We want children to become comfortable saying:
“I don’t understand this yet.”
Sometimes the next move will be another attempt.
Sometimes a picture.
Sometimes a manipulative.
Sometimes going back to an earlier idea.
Sometimes asking the teacher.
Sometimes working with a tutor.
Sometimes simply stopping for the evening and returning later.
None of those means the child has failed.
They are all ways learning continues.
The Parent’s Role Is Larger Than Homework
So what does helping without taking over actually mean?
It does not mean becoming your child’s mathematics teacher.
It does not mean knowing every method.
It does not mean guaranteeing a particular grade.
And it certainly does not mean removing every struggle.
It means helping create the conditions in which learning can continue.
You can notice when something is not making sense.
You can help your child identify where the confusion begins.
You can remind them that difficulty is often part of learning.
You can help them find the right support.
You can contact the teacher.
You can find a good tutor.
And when you do help directly, you can resist the temptation to do all the thinking for them.
Perhaps the most useful shift is from asking:
“How do we get this assignment finished?”
to asking:
“Where does the understanding begin to break down?”
Find that place.
Then remember another idea I have returned to throughout my teaching:
The best place to start is the beginning.
Strengthen what the child understands.
Build from there.
Then let the child move forward again.
That, to me, is helping without taking over.
You do not have to become your child’s math teacher.
